Birthday Flower Fairies

It has officially begun, a new series.
I have been wanting to do a birthday series for over two years now. Last year I did the colored pencil birthstone series, but only got half of them done. I find it difficult to finish a series.

I need your help!

Please keep me accountable for this series. Comment here or on Facebook, say how much you want to see your month, give ideas or suggestions, or just yell out "Hey, where's the next month?! It's been WEEKS!". :P

I want to do all twelve months. Here are the guidelines for my flower fairies...

Each piece will show:
  • The month's flower
  • The month's birthstone colors
  • A moon or sun
  • A braid of some sort in the hair (to me this is a symbol of God's warrior princess, or a daughter of God)
  • Something in the background having to do with the month and/or season
  • Must have a "Mucha" feeling. Yes, it has been done before, but I've been wanting to do it for a while and this is my chance.
  • Incorporate something from my pencil drawings (the birthstones).
Once the piece is finished I will post it as a 3.5x8.5 open edition print, and the original painting up on Etsy. I will try to get the pieces up in time for birthdays.

Since August is almost over I started with October. She's done entirely in watercolor, no colored pencil. It's been a while since I've done that.

Oh, my month is October!
I live in the Southern Hemisphere and the months of the end of the year are months when everything blooms, so I can not suggest anything to your cards. only flowers and summer fruits, sorry.:)

Sara, Don't feel bad. I'm the same way with series. What I usually do is, do part of them and do the other part later. You could do one birthday a month. That way you don't get burnt on the series :)

Hello !!

I just discovered your blog and your wonderful artwork !!!

Your birthstones fairies are so delicate and luminous I can't wait to see the rest of the serie.

I know how it is to be eager to begin a serie and then having trouble finishing it ! I recently struggled to finish my serie on the four elements !!
But at the same time I like the "journey" between the first and the last painting of a serie and how it shows the evolution in our ideas and techniques.

Awesome idea! And I love what you had before and have so far :)
I have a question: What kind of paper do you like to paint on most to achieve your colors and blending?

I would love to see you finish them, but I don' even like my birthstone. I love January and February though.

Meredith, what is your birthstone? I didn't like mine for the longest time either. Until I really started to understand color when painting. Now I don't mind it...as much. Mine is Citrine (November).

H~

I paint mainly on Arches 140lbs Hot Press. I like smooth surfaces so that I can get the detail I want. To make sure I get the vibrancy I want, I also "baptise" the paper...soaking it in cold water first, then letting it dry before I paint. :)

Just found you surfing the net and was left in awe wen I saw your faries. They are so simple and jet strong. Can not have enough watching them.

My month is also Noveber, and besides Citrine Scorpios birthstone is also Opal and would love to see some purple (somehow peopole who do months and zodiac do not seem to have visions for November and it realy sadens me)

Keep with a good work ;)

Yes isn't the other stone for Scorpio's the rainbow opal? I remember my mom giving me a necklace with it in the past.

I will be sure to add some purple into November, thank you for the suggestion! :) I always see Scorpios with dark reds and purples. I think it would be a nice combination with the soft warms of brown/orange.
